Fe₃O₄ + 14NaOH Na₄FeO₃ + 2Na₅FeO₄ + 7H₂O

Iron(II,III) oxide react with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium ferrate(II), sodium ferrate(III) and water. This reaction takes place at a temperature of 400-500°C.
